Shopify development in India: what a good build actually includes

The difference between a theme install and a build is about six percentage points of conversion rate.

The short answer

A real Shopify build includes a customised theme, correctly configured payments and COD, server-side tracking and lifecycle flows. A cheap engagement is a theme install with your logo on it, and the difference shows up in mobile speed, checkout completion and whether your purchase events are trustworthy.

Key takeaways

  • Every app you install is JavaScript on every page — audit them before launch and quarterly after.
  • Server-side purchase events are the single highest-return tracking change on most Indian stores.
  • COD needs verification and a separate conversion signal, or you train the algorithm on returns.
  • Ask for a mobile Lighthouse report on the live product page before you pay the final invoice.

Shopify is the right platform for most Indian D2C brands. That is not the interesting question. The interesting question is what you should expect for the money, because the quotes range from ₹40,000 to ₹4,00,000 for something described identically.

What the cheap version leaves out

  • Speed. A stock theme plus a dozen apps is a four-second mobile product page. Nobody at the cheap end will audit the apps, because the apps are how the features got delivered.
  • Server-side tracking. Pixel-only setups quietly lose a share of purchases to iOS and blockers, and the loss looks like poor ad performance rather than a measurement gap.
  • COD handling. Untreated, cash-on-delivery orders train the algorithm to find you more customers who will refuse the parcel.
  • Catalogue SEO. Collections and variants structured to be indexed, with product schema, so search contributes revenue that media spend did not buy.
  • Lifecycle flows. Cart recovery, order updates and reorder prompts on email and WhatsApp — the cheapest revenue in the store.

The app audit nobody does

Open your theme, list every installed app, and for each one answer two questions: what does it load on the storefront, and when did someone last look at its output? Most stores can delete a third of their apps in an afternoon and get half a second back. Do it before launch and every quarter after — app creep is the reason a store that was fast in March is slow by September.

Payments and COD, set up properly

  1. 01Razorpay or Shopify Payments with UPI first in the ordering — it is how most Indian customers pay.
  2. 02EMI enabled for anything over roughly ₹5,000, displayed on the product page rather than discovered at checkout.
  3. 03COD with verification — an OTP or a WhatsApp confirmation step before the order is released to fulfilment.
  4. 04Separate conversion signals for prepaid and verified-COD orders, so the ad platform optimises for revenue you keep.
  5. 05GST-compliant invoicing on every order. Our free GST invoice generator exists because so many stores were doing this by hand.

Questions people also ask

Four to seven weeks for a customised theme with payments, tracking and lifecycle flows. A basic theme install can be done in a week, but you are then buying the version described above as the cheap one.
