Getting quoted by AI answers, not just ranked
A growing share of searches end without a click. You still want to be the source.
To be cited by AI answers, put a self-contained forty-to-sixty word answer immediately under the heading that asks the question, support it with specific sourced figures, mark it up with schema, and keep your entity information consistent everywhere you appear online.
Key takeaways
- Answer in the first paragraph under the heading — preamble is what gets you skipped.
- Specific, sourced numbers are cited more readily than confident generalisations.
- Consistency of entity information across the web is what makes you citable.
- Track branded search and direct traffic; citations show up there before anywhere else.
The uncomfortable version: a growing share of the queries you optimised for now get answered on the results page. The optimistic version: something has to be the source of that answer, and it can be you.
How answers pick their sources
Broadly, generative systems retrieve a set of candidate pages, extract passages that directly address the question, and prefer sources that are internally consistent, specific and corroborated elsewhere. Three properties follow from that, and they are all things you control.
1. Extractability
A passage that answers the question completely, in one place, without needing the surrounding paragraphs. Heading phrased as the question, answer immediately beneath, forty to sixty words. Every sentence of preamble reduces the chance of clean extraction.
2. Specificity
'Website costs vary depending on requirements' is unciteable. '₹1,50,000 to ₹4,00,000 for a business website in India, over six to ten weeks' is a claim a system can lift and attribute. Specific and occasionally wrong beats vague and unfalsifiable.
3. Corroboration
Your name, address, founders, services and claims should look the same on your site, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and anywhere you are written about. Inconsistency is what makes a system uncertain about which entity you even are.
Schema that helps
- FAQPage for questions genuinely visible on the page. Marking up invisible content is a manual-action risk.
- Article with `abstract` carrying your answer paragraph — it is the field describing what the page claims.
- Organisation with a stable @id, referenced by every other node, so the site reads as one entity.
- Person for named authors with real credentials, which is what expertise looks like to a machine.
Measuring it
| Signal | Where to look | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions up, clicks flat | Search Console | You are appearing in answers without the click |
| Branded search rising | Search Console | People are hearing your name somewhere and searching it |
| Direct traffic rising | GA4 | Citations converting into visits |
| Named in an AI answer | Manual sampling | The direct evidence; check monthly for your key queries |
Sample your twenty most important queries in AI Overviews and a couple of assistants each month, and record who is cited. It is manual and it is currently the most reliable measurement available.
