How much does UI/UX design cost? What drives the price
"How much does UI/UX design cost?" is the first question almost every founder and product leader asks — and the honest answer is that the price follows the scope, not the type of product. Two "simple apps" can differ by a factor of five. Here is what actually moves the number, so you can plan a budget before you talk to any agency.
1. The number of user roles
Every role is a different product. A grocery app with only customers is one design problem; add riders, store pickers and an admin console and you have four. Count your roles before you count your screens — it is the single biggest cost driver.
2. Screens and, more importantly, states
A checkout is not one screen. It is empty, loading, error, payment-failed, offline and success. Mature design work covers every state, which is why a quote that only counts "pages" usually grows later. Ask any agency how many states they include.
3. Research depth
A redesign of an ERP used eight hours a day needs interviews and shadowing; a landing page needs analytics and a competitor review. Research is where most avoidable rework is prevented, so it is rarely the place to cut.
4. Integrations and rules
Payments, KYC, maps, chat, permissions and approvals all add flows. In fintech and healthcare, compliance adds screens of its own — consent, audit, data access.
5. A design system — or not
A reusable system of tokens and components costs more up front and less on every feature after. For SaaS and ERP products it almost always pays back within the first year.
How to get an estimate that holds
- List your user roles and the three tasks each one does most.
- Collect the screens or spreadsheets people use today.
- Decide what "done" means: designs only, or designs plus build.
- Ask for a fixed estimate per phase, not an hourly guess.
At Advorize we share a written estimate after a free discovery call, and because we also build, the design is scoped to what engineering will actually ship. See the kind of work this covers on our mobile, SaaS and ERP pages.
